the bathroom scene :’)
“He didn’t mean to say it. He meant to let her go. “I can help you.”
Her gaze snapped to his in the mirror, wary as if gauging an opponent. I
can help you. They were the first words she’d spoken to him, standing in the
parlor of the Menagerie, draped in purple silk, eyes lined in kohl. She had
helped him. And she’d nearly destroyed him. Maybe he should let her finish the job.”

It terrified him.
kaz: *thinking about inej’s smile, the way she laughs, the way her skin catches moonlight- she’s actually motivated him to become a better person for his own good, teasing her about her suli proverbs, his heartbeat racing whenever he looks at her*
kaz: *voice cracking* god i fucking love money so much

…he looked at her then, eyes fierce, mouth set. it was the face he wore when he was fighting.
“how will you have me?” she repeated. “fully clothed, gloves on, your head turned away so our lips can never touch?”
he released her hand, his shoulders bunching, his gaze angry and ashamed as he turned his face to the sea.
maybe it was because his back was to her that she could finally speak the words. “i will have you without armor, kaz brekker. or i will not have you at all.”
“My little Suli idealist. All you need is a full belly and an open road?” he said, the mockery clear in is voice.
“And an easy heart, Kaz.” That was the difficult part.[ … ]
He grinned at her, his smile sudden and jarring as a thunderclap, his eyes the near-black of bitter coffe. “We’ll be kings and queens, Inej. Kings and Queens.”
“Hmm,” she said noncommitally, pretending to examine one of her knives, determined to ignore that grin. Kaz was not a giddy boy smiling and planning a future with her. He was a dangerous player who was always working an angle. Always, she reminded herself.
“he had been so much of her world for
so long”
Inej & Kaz // I’m way too good at goodbyes
She would have her ship
and he would have his city.
“He was going to break my legs ,” she said, her chin held high, the barest quaver in her voice. “Would you have come for me then, Kaz? When I couldn’t scale a wall or walk a tightrope? When I wasn’t the Wraith anymore?”
Dirtyhands would not. The boy who could get them through this, get their money, keep them alive, would do her the courtesy of putting her out of her misery, then cut his losses and move on.
“I would come for you,” he said, and when he saw the wary look she shot him, he said it again. “I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together—knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
kaz brekker literally made the ravkan king send scouts to track down inej’s parents, bought inej a fully furnished warship and gave up one of his dregs to be her first mate and basically bankrupted himself to free inej of the contract binding her to the dregs so that she’d be able to leave ketterdam freely, even though that is the last thing he wants her to do

It terrified him.
She felt slightly guilty for eavesdropping on Kaz, but he was the one who turned her into a spy. You couldn’t train a falcon, then expect it not to hunt.
