  • Color Reference Guide to Recognize & Avoid Whitewashing

    amorverus:

I’ve made a tutorial on how to color adjust to fix washed out coloringsbut I noticed people aren’t always sure when their coloring needs fixing in the first place. So I’ve made a bunch of colorings you can use to compare your own to. It’s designed to help avoid whitewashing, but also help avoid over-correction.

If you’re not a content creator, you can also use this guide for reblogging as well. :)

    Using the Guide

    • Each set comes in three: cool, neutral, and warm. If your coloring is bluer/whiter than the cool tone, consider readjusting.
    • Examples of what might be too pale/bright are beneath each set
    • There are various categories (daytime, night scenes, etc) for each type of scene you might encounter
    • Each coloring has a color palette beneath for the highlights, midtones, and shadows of the character’s face. If you’re having trouble eyeballing it, use the eyedropper tool to double check.

    NOTES
    1) For the sake of simplicity, I’ve used one character per category, but characters of color are not interchangeable. Identify the skin tone for the character you’re coloring and work with that. This is only meant to give a frame of reference for what is and isn’t whitewashing

    2) If any of the colorings look different than what they’ve been stated as (i.e. the cool tones look too warm or some look way too dark to be visible) calibrate your monitor. It means your screen color and gamma needs readjustment.

    Gif tutorial by nialhoranz

    nialhoranz:

Recently, I got a message asking me how I make my gifs. So, I decided to do a tutorial! I learned how to make gifs through various tutorials, and I wanted to make one to help those who don’t know how to make gifs.

    We’re gonna go from this:

    image

    to this:

    image

    You’re going to need:

    - Photoshop. I use CS5.

    - KMPlayer to take screencaps for the gif

    - A PSD and/or an action to sharpen your gif if you don’t know how to/wan to do it manually

    Anonymous asked:
Do you know how to cut out an image? I use the polygonal lasso tool but it doesnt come out really nice and I just want to know if theres an easier and more effective way of cutting out images?

    buchcnans:

actually yes! there’s a much easier way to cut out images than using the polygonal lasso.

    • first off, open up your image onto photoshop. (i’m using psc5) this is the photo i’ll be using.
    image
    • next, click the letter “q” on your keyboard. this creates a mask for your picture. click it once and then click your brush tool. once you’ve clicked your brush tool, paint over your person. the brush tool should come off as red, and it should look like this.
    image
    • paint over the entire person (or whoever/whatever you want to cut out) i like to use a small brush, so that it’s easier to paint over the more difficult spots to paint over. once you’ve finished painting over them, it should look something like this.
    image
    • now all you have to do is click “q” again and it should outline what you’ve painted. it should look like this.

    image

    • now, click delete on your keyboard and voila!

easy right? i hope this was able to help you lovely! if you have any other questions, feel free to come back and ask them!

Color Adjusting for POC with PSDs Made for White People

    amorverus:

Since there aren’t half as many PSDs or coloring tutorials designed for POC, I figured a better way is to show people how to adjust the PSDs or techniques they already have on hand instead.

    Things we will look at:

    1. How to recognize white washed POC**
    2. How to fix it

I’ve divided it into 3 parts under the cut :D

**This is also for people who reblog things and want to know what is and isn’t white washing

    how i make my gifs

    munnlocke:

I was asked by a lovely anon to make a tutorial on how I make my GIFs (especially my Sara Lance/Legends of Tomorrow gifs). Instead of making a step by step tutorial on how to make gifs, I put together this post with links to tutorials and resources that I use or have used, as a well as other tips I think are helpful. I also included a coloring tutorial (and psd) detailing my usual process for LoT. Hopefully it will be of use to someone. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or would like a more in depth explanation of something :)

    Software I use:

    Video Sources:

    • Youtube (for clips)
    • I get all my DCTV episode downloads from here. I use 1080p quality whenever possible (especially for movies). 720p is also okay, if I make smaller gifs. Anything lower than that will not produce clear, crisp gifs.

    Tutorials and Resources:

    • Resource blogs: yeahps, completeresources, itsphotoshop- all of these have tons of basic and advanced tutorials on every step of the gif making process.
    • How to make gifs by theflashgifs- this is the tutorial I first learned from and the basic method I use when giffing shows and movies.
    • How to make gifs by importing video directly into PS- I use this method when giffing shorter clips such as trailers and interviews.
    • My go to sharpening action
    • Gif dimensions - I use the ‘old’ dimensions, which means my content is 500px wide, including the padding. Check out this post to learn all about dimensions.
    • Cropping tutorial to avoid over-sharpening- Over sharpening can make a gif look noisy. This trick makes your gifs look cleaner.
    • My usual save settings- These are flexible and I highly recommend experimenting with them. Depending on the gif I might choose ‘diffusion’ instead of ‘pattern’, and ‘selective’ instead of ‘adaptive’. Remember: the higher the dither, the bigger the file size. However, gifs with low dither look LQ. You want your colors at 256, however, if you find your file size is too large, and you don’t want to delete frames, try lowering the colors.

    Coloring:

    image

I’m going to go through a very basic coloring process for a colorful, vibrant gif, as seen in the gifs above. I’ve included a download for the finished psd at the end. Since I’m posting the psd, I’m not including screenshot of the exact values of each of my layers in the breakdown below. If you’re interested in that, you can take a look at the psd. Now let’s get on with in it!

    SHARPENING FOR PHOTOSHOP CC

Any gifmakers who use Photoshop CC know that using the same sharpening technique as CS5 gifmakers doesn’t have the same effect on CC. When sharpening on CC, gifs can turn out “muddy”, or undersharpened, unlike the crisp CS5 sharpening. After many many months of fiddling with my actions and techniques, I finally found a way to better replicate the crisp CS5 sharpening look. I figured I would share what I learned for other people also struggling to make their gifs look better.

My process is under the cut.
