a pen so you can sign a contract with the devil
I’m going to try to explain how I usually color my gifs with some extra explanation and comments on how and why. I go like this on almost everything and it works like a charm.

Of course! Let me just say when you start off making gifs it can be very difficult and confusing (I know it was for me). So I’m going to try and give you lots of tips and things that I’ve learned so hopefully you can skip lots of the hard parts I had to learn on my own. Also don’t get discouraged if you feel like your gifs aren’t turning out amazing, you’ve just started and it’s taken me over the course of 3 years to start making ones I’m actually happy with, as always practice gives you experience! Anyways enough of my rambling lets get started.
per the request of a couple of people, i’m going to walk you through how i personally make my gifs. it’s a little time consuming at first, but as you become more comfortable with making gifs, the process goes quicker – i promise! i’ve included both how i make my gifs and some tips on coloring. *warning: this is tutorial is extremely image heavy, and pretty long! if you have any more questions, feel free to message me and i’ll help you out as much as i can! and if this helped you, a like / reblog would be super appreciated.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED BEFORE GETTING STARTED:
high - definition video (720p / 1080p is preferable) downloaded in either .mov / .mp4 / .avi format.

I’m making a tutorial upon the request of a lovely anon. This is a tutorial for the edits I made in this Stark Ladies Graphic post. It’s super easy and 100% safe for beginners! However, if you have absolutely ZERO experience with Photoshop, I suggest you familiarizing yourself with the basics, which can be found on the many resource blogs here on tumblr (xxxx).
A few days ago, I hit 500 followers, and I had you guys vote on what you’d like to see me make! It was a close tie between this manip tutorial and a FC directory, and while that’s still in the works for the future, this is something I’ve been wanting to post for a while. I’m excited to show you guys the deep dark secrets of gif manip making.
These are the gifs I’m starting with:

note: for the sake of this tutorial, I am using two gifs that I made myself, but I often just find ones to use from gif hunts.
So, I’ve decided to offer some alternative dimensions for GIF/icons that you can use that should still fit your aesthetic while being slightly easier for anyone with less than 20/20 vision to see (without squinting or zooming in). They’re just some ideas, me just cropping a test gif in various shapes, but I really like how a lot of them turned out!! So for reference, this is the gif I started with (made by myself so please don’t use elsewhere).
Yes, by RP standards, that’s pretty large. But I wanted room to work. So the first GIF is 300x100. This means the GIF won’t page-stretch, but the extra width gives eyes a lot of breathing room.
The second gif is 150x100, which is just slightly wider than most 100x00 icons. You wouldn’t think that extra 50 pixels would make a difference, but it’s actually a lot easier for me to see!! (I’m not speaking for everyone here, but it is easier on my eyes personally).
This next GIF is similar to the first (wide and short), but it’s 250x100 (for if your theme doesn’t resize images that are too big and you’re using a small theme). This will be full-width on your blog only, on the dashboard it’s still pretty compact (while, again, not page-stretching).
The fourth gif I have for you is 100x125. Again, you wouldn’t think so few pixels makes any difference, but they really do. This works if you’d rather not have full-width images but don’t mind/like taller images.
For the fifth gif, the dimensions are 150x125. That’s a total of an extra 75 pixels (much easier on the eyes), but evenly distrubuted so the GIF doesn’t seem too large to you.
This one is a lot like the fourth GIF, but slightly wider (if the previous one is just too oddly proportioned for you). It’s 115x125. It’s a little closer to an icon in orientation.
If those don’t appeal to you, this next one is supershort, but still wide enough to be visible. It’s 250x50.
And this one is actually inspire by my computer screen (which of course is designed for readability), but (obviously) scaled down pretty reasonably. This last one is 250x156.
And, of course, if none of those inspire you, a slightly bigger GIF icon is a perfectly acceptable solution (and not as bad as people seem to make it out to be?). Here is an example of 150x150.
And 125x125, if those extra 100 pixels are still too much for you.
Now, obviously, I can’t force you to use these, and I’m not going to. But I do hope this at least sparks an idea! Your GIFs can be visible while still looking nice on your blog, I promise! I’m not trying to be condescending by suggesting these, I’m really not, but it would be really nice to feel like I don’t have to strain my eyes in order to roleplay. I hope this is useful to you, or someone else!
how to psd if photoshop actions are not your aesthetic
literally no one asked for this tutorial but seeing as this had me stumped for two years…
allow me to set the scene. you’re a roleplayer who’s on the hunt for icons, and you want those icons to look good. we’re talking recoloring, textures and fancy-ass borders. you’ve looked at how to enact photoshop actions where the software does all that stuff for you but you just don’t like it for some reason. okay, cool.
this is for you guys, and it’s about how to still have nice icon psds without memorizing numbers to put in different adjustment layers. we’re gonna change this

the shit that you’ll need. you’re gonna need
Photoshop (i have cs5 but if you have a newer version then good for you) a vague knowledge of how to use Photoshop icons already cropped to 100x100 (i edit mine in batches of five because i’m a dweeb but that’s not necessarily a requirement)*
this tutorial is on a mac, so the instructions (keyboard shortcuts, menus for saving and opening) are gonna be for a mac.
*if these are icons that you’re using from someone else PLEASE CREDIT THEM!! this can just be a reblog of their giant icon post or a mention of them on one of your blog pages but it’s pretty fuckin important that you do give credit. also, don’t use their icons as base icons if they say out loud that they don’t like that, yeah?
